Blocking FirstSearch Databases

From time to time, OCLC adds databases to FirstSearch. In some cases, a database may not be appropriate for VIVA to use, either because it is duplicated by another VIVA database, it is too expensive, or for some other consideration.

The VIVA Steering Committee has set a policy that VIVA libraries in public institutions are to block all new FirstSearch databases until the Collections Committee can review them for appropriateness.

Currently blocked databases are:

Database Database Number
Acxiom Directories - Home 47
AGRICOLA 25
AIDS/Cancer Research 50
Basic BIOSIS 5
BioDigest 26
Books in Print 45
Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature 51
ECO Electronic Collections Online 64
Environment database 37
Health Reference Center 62
Health Reference Center with Full-Text 63
MEDLINE 29
Microcomputer Abstracts 33
MDX Health Digest 35
PCI Periodical Abstracts 7
Periodicals Contents Index 61
PsycFIRST 13
Sociological Abstracts: Abridged Edition 14
SIRS Researcher 59
WilsonSelect 57
World Book Encyclopedia 65

FirstSearch databases on the VIVA Web pages are blocked centrally. However, each institution also has its own authorization account and is responsible for blocking. To block a FirstSearch database:

  1. Telnet to:

    fscat.oclc.org

  2. At the Enter your authorization prompt, enter your 9-digit authorization number, e.g.,

    111-222-333

  3. At the Enter your password prompt, enter your SYSTEM password assigned to your library
  4. When you reach the main FS database screen (you may have had to hit ENTER a couple of times) at the Topic Area Number (or Action) prompt, enter the word ADMIN
  5. At the Administrative Password prompt enter your ADMIN password. This may or may not be identical to your System password.
  6. At the Function Number (or Action) prompt press the number "3", which is for "Block/Unblock access to databases".
  7. Enter FORWARD until a database to be blocked appears in the list.
  8. At the Database Number (or Action) prompt enter the number for that database and hit return/enter. The screen will readjust, now displaying the letter "B" for blocked instead of the "A" for available.
  9. Proceed through the database list, blocking the appropriate databases.
  10. After making all required changes, enter SAVE.
  11. At the Do you want to save changes? (y/n), enter "Y"
  12. Remember that ALL VIVA Public Institutions MUST block at least those on the list above. Any VIVA Institution FS administrator who needs to find out a library's AUTHO, SYSTEM pw, or ADMIN pw may contact John Walsh, VIVA Collections Committee liaison to OCLC.
