Two tours are offered as optional programs for this ICOLC meeting. Please be sure to register for them when you register for the conference:
Tour the UVA Lawn -- Wednesday, April 15, 4:30 - 5:30pm. "Tour a LAWN?" Yes, not only is the Lawn a beautiful space, it was part of Thomas Jefferson's orginal design for his "Academical Village", one of only four man-made structures in the United States to be named a World Heritage Site. An architectural historian will lead ICOLC members on the tour of the Lawn, including the Rotunda and the prestigious residences and gardens on the Lawn. You can read more about Jefferson's "Academical Village" in the University of Virginia magazine.
Cost: $14 (includes bus service leaving at 4:15 pm from the Omni). From the tour, you will be able to join the welcoming reception at the UVA Harrison/Small Library and return to the Omni by bus.) In the unlikely event that this tour does not meet the minimum of 18 people, you will be refunded your money.
Exclusive Evening tour of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello -- Thursday, April 16, 6-7:30 pm. Whether or not you've seen Monticello before, you won't want to miss this exclusive tour with your ICOLC colleagues. As a special feature, the tour will include the third floor dome room and other areas not normally open to the public. Weather permitting, there should be spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunset. Be sure to bring your camera. The NY Times has an article (April 9, 2009) about the new Visitors Center which, coincidentally, is opening on Wednesday:
