VIVA Distinguished Service Award

The VIVA Distinguished Service Award was established by a resolution of the Steering Committee in 2008 to honor individuals for "remarkable dedication and superior service to colleagues in the Commonwealth of Virginia."

The first Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Harry Kriz on November 14, 2008, upon his retirement as Director of Interlibrary Services at Virginia Tech. The resolution read:

WHEREAS, VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia, is the cooperative consortium for 73 nonprofit academic libraries in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and

WHEREAS, InterLibrary Loan is an essential component of VIVA’s cooperative work, and

WHEREAS, Harry Kriz has generously provided professional guidance and mentoring support for interlibrary loan librarians at all stages of their careers, and

WHEREAS, Harry Kriz has always been the backbone of the VIVA InterLibrary Loan and the Resource Sharing Committees, and

WHEREAS, Harry Kriz has consistently provided excellent analysis of the ILL statistics for the Virtual Library of Virginia, and

WHEREAS, Harry Kriz has provided thought-provoking presentations about InterLibrary Loan to the VIVA ILL Community and to the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia’s Library Advisory Council on many occasions,

THEREFORE, NOW BE IT RESOLVED that VIVA recognizes and applauds the career of Harry Kriz, offers him our sincere thanks and gratitude for all that he has accomplished as an InterLibrary Loan librarian, and extends our warmest wishes to him upon his retirement.

Further, BE IT RESOLVED that in recognition of Harry Kriz’s remarkable dedication and superior service to his colleagues in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virtual Library of Virginia hereby establishes the

VIVA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

and bestows upon Harry Kriz the honor of being the first person to receive this award.
