Louveller Luster(recorder), Paul Metz, Pamela Morgan, Jim Self, Pat Van Zandt,
John Walsh, and Kathy Perry, VIVA Director.

1. Announcements

Jim Self announced that the opening of the "Declaring Independence: Creating and
Recreating America's Document" exhibit featuring items from the Albert H. Small
Declaration of Independence Collection at the Small Special Collections Library

3. Approval of Minutes of , 2000 meeting

Minutes from the previous two meetings were posted. Minutes approved by
consensus.

4. Budget - K. Perry

K. Perry distributed new budget spreadsheet.

5. Renewals

AP Archives - K. Perry Renewal approved.

Science - K. Perry Awaiting pricing information.

Statistical Universe - P. Morgan Awaiting pricing information. However,
committee discussed additional upgrade to Statistical Universe subscription. Pam
will investigate pricing for consortium.

Cambridge University Press - P. Morgan Awaiting pricing information.

Oxford University Press - P. Morgan Awaiting pricing information.


6. Training - P. Van Zandt

We scheduled Books in Print and Ulrich's Periodical Directory training on
Thursday, December 2 at Hollins University with registration at 9:30, training
from 10-12, and lunch (compliments of Bowker) from 12-1:30. Paul Metz, Director
of Collection Management at Virginia Tech, will present an afternoon program
from 1:30-2:30. The second session will be held on Friday, December 3 at William
with registration at 9:30, training from 10-12. The session will conclude after
lunch (compliments of Bowker).

7. Factiva Review - G. Damon

John received 52 responses from library directors and 75 general responses for
the Factiva survey.


8. OCLC Update - J. Walsh)

Turnaway rate decreased since last month and the number of searches increased.
Committee may want to consider adding new ports after January 2005. John
recommended the addition of 3 new ports on the order beginning February 1, 2005.

Philosopher's Index (FS Addition)

This database is offered as a subscription only database. It was recommended not
to include it in our FS offering.

9. Review of new offers

IOP current journals - P. Van Zandt

Pat distributed pricing for all public institutions to committee members prior
to the meeting. The cost is based on 2004 pricing. Institutions may cancel their
print subscriptions beginning in 2006. There is a price cap of 6%. Beginning in
2006 VIVA will assume the entire cost. Gene recommended 50% cost sharing for
2005/6 with VIVA institutions and option to cancel your print for 2006.


Approved purchase under the cost sharing model.

Engineering Handbooks + Chemical Handbooks - P. Van Zandt

Approved the purchase of EngnetBase and CRC Handbook of Chemistry with the cost
not to exceed $54,000.


Dissertation Abstracts - P. Morgan

Pam presented a new price quote with no price increase for next 3 years. Price
based on dissertation production. Committee recommended further discussion with
vendor on pricing.


BioMed Central - J. Penner

Jonathan Lord, UVA Health Sciences Librarian, talked about BioMed Central,
including its benefits and features as an open access initiative. He mentioned
that some of the titles are now assigned impact factors. The purchase of this
database would make a statement in support of open access. Currently OhioLink
Consortium has an arrangement with BioMedCentral. He informed the committee that
a better deal would be offered with more subscribers. Institutional members
receive an additional 15% discount on other BioMedCentral products. Each
institution was asked to send him their FTE for Biology graduate students and
faculty.


Nature Archives - P. Van Zandt

Nature Archives offers two archive products. With the purchase of both archive
products, Nature Methods will be free for 2006. Pat will investigate the
ten-year archive pricing.


PsychBooks - S. Gasser

Sharon distributed information about the OVID proposal prior to the meeting. She
reported on the consortia discount price and loader fee. Subscribers must wait
every two months to purchase new titles. There is an embargo period for titles.

Blackwell Publishing - S. Gasser

The Committee decided to re-visit the proposal at a later date.


University of Chicago Press - J. Walsh

All but 3% of the 46 titles are available online. John will investigate
consortium pricing.

Cell Press - S. Gasser

There are ten titles. Sharon provided list and discount pricing. She will talk
to the vendor about discounts.  No action.


ASM - S. Gasser

Sharon reported that they are interested in working with VIVA. She will obtain
more information for the Committee.


SIAM - P. Metz

They do not work with consortia.

AIP - P. Van Zandt

They have not responded to her phone call.

ASA - P. Metz

Paul began dialogue with them.

Human Kinetics - K. Carey

They have not responded to her phone call.

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - K. Perry

Kathy distributed pricing structure and background information for the SEP
(Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) to the committee. The foundation needs
financial support from libraries to keep it freely available with a one-time
donation. Kathy asked us to contact the philosophy faculty at your institution
for their comments about this resource.


10. VIVA Serials Audit Project - P. Metz

Paul reviewed the serials analysis final report for VIVA Directors and the
Library and Media Services Advisory Committee of SCHEV. He asked for comments or
recommendations concerning this project.


11. On going support from member institutions

Gene discussed the importance of institutional financial support for VIVA. He
requested committee members to talk to their Directors about membership buy-in
fee.



12. Other Business (New Offers)

There was a brief discussion on locally mounting data such as AP Archives by
VIVA. It was asked that Jane pursue this project and return with a proposal or
recommendation.
