3. Approval of Minutes of May 13, 2004 meeting

Postponed.

4. Budget -- K. Perry

Kathy Perry distributed a draft showing statistics on searches and article

downloads of VIVA resources from FY 95-96 through FY 03-04, noting that there

had been 53 million searches. She also distributed the latest VIVA collections

budget. She also shared a publication, Viva VIVA!, with the committee. The

publication highlights the first ten years of VIVA.

5. Training -- P. Van Zandt

Patricia Van Zandt reported that CSA is changing their interface; notice of this

change will be posted on the VIVA listserv. Patricia suggested eliminating the

separate VIVA training webpage and incorporating the information into the vendor

help page. Kathy will work with Pat to resolve this. Pat noted that if VIVA

acquires new products this year, training will be provided as necessary.

6. Renewals

A. Galenet - J. Rettig

5% increase for publics; $0.82 per FTE for privates. If VIVA acquires the

Literature Resource Center, then Contemporary Authors would be redundant.

Renewal approved.

B. CIAO - L. Luster

No price increase. Renewal approved.

C. Congressional Universe - P. Morgan

12.3% price increase, driven by increases in FTE. Renewal approved. Lexis/Nexis

has been very cost-conscious during Virginia's flat or reduced budget situation,

so this increase is considered fair.

D. CSA - P. Van Zandt

5% increase. Renewal approved.

E. ACS - S. Gasser

8.5% increase for current web editions; 2% increase for the archives. The

Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences has been renamed the

Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling. A new journal will be published in

2005, the Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation. Renewal approved.

F. Highwire - S. Abramson

Renewal approved, pending some additional pricing information.

G. Project Muse - K. Cary

A new pricing model results in a lower price than was paid last year. However,

Duke University Press is pulling 18 journals out of Project Muse. These titles

are being sold as part of an electronic package by Duke University Press. Karen

will investigate, confirm pricing of titles and distribute the information to

the committee. Renewal approved.

H. Journal of Advanced Nursing - S. Gasser

This title, formerly part of Ovid, is now provided electronically by Blackwell

Publishing. The price increases significantly under Blackwell. Still, because of

the large number of uses, the estimated cost per search would remain low at

$0.48 per use. Renewal approved.

7. Factiva Review - J. Tombarge

John's subcommittee has prepared a survey and is waiting for necessary approval

on conducting human subject research. The committee discussed various options

for distributing the survey. John also provided information on the renewal

offer: 5% increase. Renewal approved.

8. First Search Update - J. Walsh

Based on use from last year, John estimates that a 5% increase in use would

result in the need for 206,052 searches in FY05. He recommended renewing ports

at the same level as last year. Use data can be examined in October; if

necessary, the number of ports could be increased at that time. Any problems

with access may be emailed to John. First Search will become the platform for

ILL; next July they will phase out the old ILL system. John will be working on a

review of First Search.

9. New Offers

A. Digital Dissertation database-Pam Morgan

After discussion, the Committee agreed that there was interest in acquiring the

product. Pam will investigate further and present a proposal at the next

meeting.

B. CSA-Pat Van Zandt

CSA offered options for the acquisition of Art Bibliographies Modern and

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts; the Committee decided to forego these for

now

C. IEEE-John Walsh

John present a proposal from IEEE for IEL and/or ASPP. After discussion, the

Committee decided not to pursue the offer at this time.

D. Referex Engineering-Pam Morgan

Contains 350 full-text titles. The database is updated for the latest edition

and catalog records are provided. Committee members were asked to spot check

their library's holdings against the Referex list and forward the information to

Pam. Larry Thompson from Virginia Tech will coordinate a comparison of Referex,

Knovel, CRC, etc. with a focus on engineering. He may provide recommendations.

Pam will present a proposal at the next meeting.

E. Investigations of new products:

Safari and 24/7 (electronic books)-Sylvia Rortvedt

CQ Electronic Library-Sherle Abramson

Historical Newspapers-Pat Van Zandt

F. Literature Resource Center (LRC)-Kathy Perry

Comparative information for LRC and Literature Online was presented. After

discussion, it was the consensus that, at this time, the LRC was the first

priority for a literature resource.

G. IOP-Pat Van Zandt

Pat has had some preliminary discussions with IOP on pricing, including a price

cap. She will investigate further and present a proposal at the next meeting.

Gene will send an email to the Committee in the next week summarizing this

discussion.

10.

.VIVA Serials Audit Project-Paul Metz

Paul presented an overview of the Project's work thus far. The data reported

current subscriptions and also identified publishers with whom VIVA might

productively explore package deals. The task force will present a formal report

at the December meeting of the Steering Committee.

Next meeting: October 13, 2004
