Kathy reviewed the budget, noting that renewal prices through 12/31/03 are
known. With estimates of renewals in early 2004, she estimates that
approximately $33,000 remains uncommitted at this point. She distributed copies
of the SCHEV Agenda Item for 2004-06, requesting funding for an additional $4
million in FY 2005 and 2006 to support enrollment growth, the Commonwealth's
research agenda in the sciences and technology, and enhancing instructional
quality. 5. Training Subcommittee -- P. Van Zandt
Training on the Gale version of MLA is scheduled on September 23 at Old Dominion
University and September 24 at James Madison University. Training is needed on
of Factiva administrative functions, particularly how to set preferences and
make them stick. It was suggested that this be referred to John Tombarge's
business resources group for training and sharing with VIVA institutions.
Concerns were also expressed about the growing number of embargoed titles in

VIVA has about 1.5 months of banked searches. He noted that the Alternative

out with appropriate changes. John said that the PAIS Archive will be available
in 2004 and he will bring price information to a future meeting.
9. VIVA Serials Project - S. Gasser Sharon reported that the Ulrich's Serials
Analysis program is now available; this has been acquired for VIVA to fulfill
the request from the Steering Committee to conduct an audit of serials holdings.
The goal is a statewide holdings list that will show duplicate and last copy
holdings. In early October a downloadable file for all VIVA institutions will be
available. The following steps are:
A. Gene Damon will ask library directors to name their institution's manager
for this project. Gene will coordinate the community colleges. B. Serials
subcommittee will develop a summary page with Instructions.
C. Training will be scheduled on how to use the program ("train the trainer"
approach).
D. Passwords will be provided to each institution's manager.
E. It was suggested that the response to holdings be changed from "yes" to a
number to indicate multiple copies.
