Resources for Users Committee -- Minutes

1. Announcements



Sherle Abramson, who is replacing Jacque Dessino on the committee, was

introduced.  Sherle is College Librarian at Rappahannock Community College.



Kathy announced that VIVA has been nominated for the Governor's Technology Award

in the Higher Education category, to be awarded on September 22.



2. Changes to agenda

3. Approval of Minutes of , 2000 meeting



No changes --Minutes approved by consensus.



4. Budget -- k. Perry



Kathy reviewed the budget, noting that renewal prices through 12/31/03 are

known.  With estimates of renewals in early 2004, she estimates that

approximately $33,000 remains uncommitted at this point.  She distributed copies

of the SCHEV Agenda Item for 2004-06, requesting funding for an additional $4

million in FY 2005 and 2006 to support enrollment growth, the Commonwealth's

research agenda in the sciences and technology, and enhancing instructional

quality. 5. Training Subcommittee -- P. Van Zandt



Training on the Gale version of MLA is scheduled on September 23 at Old Dominion

University and September 24 at James Madison University. Training is needed on 

of Factiva administrative functions,  particularly how to set preferences and

make them stick.  It  was suggested that this be referred to John Tombarge's

business resources group for training and sharing with VIVA institutions.  

Concerns were also expressed about the growing number of embargoed titles in

Factiva 6. CIAO



The committee confirmed that email approval of renewal of CIAO



7.  Renewals



A. American Chemical Society Journals - S. Gasser



Price cap increased to 8.5%. Chemical Investigation ceased and will be refunded,

one new title was added, archives have a 2% price cap. Renewal approved.



B. American Mathematical Society Journals - P. Van Zandt 5% increase; statistics

still not available. Renewal approved.



MathSciNet



5% increase; statistics are available now. Renewal approved.



C. AP Archives - K. Perry There will be a fixed fee for access to the 1996-2002

AP archive; Kathy is waiting for confirmation of the amount. No vote.



D. Cambridge Scientific Abstracts - P. Van Zandt Pat had a quote for CSA,

Agricola and Soc Abs. They also gave her options for other products, including

Sage titles. Renewal date is 12/31/03; Pat will send details of other offers to

the RUC members. Vote postponed, may be electronic.



E. Cambridge University Press Journals - P. Morgan



Pam explained their pricing structure and lost and new titles for 2004. Renewal

approved.



It was also recommended that changes in titles be added to the VIVA Vendor Help

Page and sent to the collections contacts.





F.	Oxford University Press 7% price increase; 8 new journals added, three

lost for 2004. The problem of blocked titles such as Military Balance was noted.

Renewal approved.



G.	GaleNet - J. Rettig 2% increase. Renewal approved. There was discussion of

Literature Resource Center, which is currently a VCCS subscription and is

integrated with Gale's MLA.



H.	Harper's Weekly - K. Perry Maintenance fee for second year: approved.



I.	Highwire - K. Perry Kathy and Sherle will work on this for the next

meeting.



J.	Project Muse - K. Cary 17% price increase, 36 new titles. There was

concern about the growing trend to partial content; some society journals are

not including full content. Jim Self asked Kathy to bring the question to ICOLC

of aggregators warranting their content. Renewal approved.



8. OCLC Update -- J. Walsh)



VIVA has about 1.5 months of banked searches. He noted that the Alternative

Press Archive is available and recommended access since we get Alternative Press

Index. Some updates are needed to the blocked databases list, and some are gone

entirely and should be removed. John Duke will be asked to send a single message

out with appropriate changes. John said that the PAIS Archive will be available

in 2004 and he will bring price information to a future meeting.



9.	VIVA Serials Project - S. Gasser Sharon reported that the Ulrich's Serials

Analysis program is now available; this has been acquired for VIVA to fulfill

the request from the Steering Committee to conduct an audit of serials holdings.

The goal is a statewide holdings list that will show duplicate and last copy

holdings. In early October a downloadable file for all VIVA institutions will be

available. The following steps are:



A.	Gene Damon will ask library directors to name their institution's manager

for this project. Gene will coordinate the community colleges. B.	Serials

subcommittee will develop a summary page with Instructions.



C.	Training will be scheduled on how to use the program ("train the trainer"

approach).



D.	Passwords will be provided to each institution's manager.



E.	It was suggested that the response to holdings be changed from "yes" to a

number to indicate multiple copies.



F.	Sharon recommended a review article on Ulrich's Serials Analysis:

10. Other Business



A. Institute of Physics - P. Van Zandt



Kathy received a proposal for the 1874-1992 historic archive; Pat will find out

about management and access fees, and whether any of the VIVA institutions has

already bought this.



B. BioOne - P. Van Zandt



Database includes 67 bioscience journals, many society publications, many

heavily-used; some VIVA institutions already subscribe. Pat will pursue the

offer.



C. MLA from Gale - K. Perry



There are two MLA training sessions scheduled in September. RUC will identify a

small group of MLA users to work with Jim Rettig to resolve concerns about the

switch from Ovid to Gale.



D. Science renewal - K. Perry



Kathy has a quote from them for action later in the year for a spring renewal.



E. SIRS - Gene Damon



Library of Virginia has renewed SIRS for another year. They have just been

acquired by ProQuest.



F. ICOLC Meeting - K. Perry



Kathy asked for any feedback on usage statistics and Project Counter; she will

be at their focus group at ICOLC.



G.	Jane Penner invited RUC to visit the newly-renovated Clark Hall Science

and Engineering Library.
