PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release (February 15, 2005):
VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia, is excited to announce access to 31 current physics journals from the Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP), adding to the previous subscription to archived editions that provided coverage through 1993. All VIVA institutions now are can offer their users the most current issues of these premier, peer-reviewed journals covering both pure and applied physics. The title list is available on the www.iop.org website through a link entitled, “Journals at your site.” The website offers news in the physical sciences and many additional features including a newsletter for librarians, along with links to set up alerting services and RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to help researchers keep up with a their favorite journal. Along with these personalization options, IOP supports CrossRef and meta-searching. Faculty and students will benefit from this collection of significant and authoritative information in the physical sciences.
IOP has added new search options to the standard searching by field, subject, journal, date or full-text. Using algorithms developed by the Vivisimo Search Engine, users can search by clustering technology to find similar articles. IOP has also created searchable subsets of review articles in physics and interdisciplinary areas like Bose-Einstein condensation and matter waves that appear in a number of journals. Some of the online journals contain multimedia files and other supplemental information, taking full advantage of the electronic environment.
For institutions that currently subscribe to the journals, VIVA has developed a new cost sharing formula that phases out institutional support as VIVA assumes subscription costs.
