VIVA is pleased to announce that a new contract with R.R. Bowker provides for the continued availability of the Books in Print online database to member libraries and adds access to the online version of Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, ulrichsweb.com.
Long considered an essential collection development resource, Books in Print, is available to members in one of two versions.
BOOKS IN PRINT WITH REVIEWS
Booksinprint.com provides more than 4.8 million titles including in print,
out-of-print, e-books, audio books, videos, and on-demand titles. It also
includes TOC's, First Chapters, Author biographies, stock information
for distributors and wholesalers, links to library OPAC's, order download
facilities, MARC record output and the ability to create electronic lists
for collection development and acquisitions.

GLOBAL BOOKS IN PRINT WITH REVIEWS
Globalbooksinprint.com contains bibliographic information for nearly
nine million titles from the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand,
and South Africa. It also includes TOC's, First Chapters, Author biographies,
stock information for distributors and wholesalers, links to library OPAC's,
order download facilities, MARC record output and the ability to create
electronic lists for collection development and acquisitions.

Using either version of this resource, students and faculty of Virginia colleges and universities can identify books, video, or audio materials to support courses and research. These web-based products have powerful searching capabilities. In addition to keyword/subject, author, or title access, in the advanced search mode a user can apply limits such as year of publication, price, and review source. As well as complete bibliographical information, individual entries include publisher information and availability status as well as reviews and a synopsis when available to aid in the evaluation of materials. In Globalbooksinprint.com, many entries also contain tables of contents. Another valuable feature of these products is the ability to create lists of materials that can be used for research bibliographies and/or selection lists. Lists may be downloaded, e-mailed or printed. Libraries can elect to have an active link to their online catalog which would allow a user to check for local availability of a desired title.
The new Bowker contract also makes the online version of Ulrich's Periodicals
Directory, ulrichsweb.com, available to VIVA libraries. This product provides
users with the means of locating over 250,000 journal, magazine, newspaper
and newsletter titles published in the United States and around the world.
The web-based database boasts a strong search interface that allows a
user to search by title, subject, and keyword and to add limits such as
language, review source, frequency, and document delivery source in the
advanced search mode. Entries contain bibliographic and subscription information
as well as reviews, where the title is indexed and the website for the
title. Some entries provide extra evaluation resources in the form of
links to tables of contents, article abstracts, journal full-text, and
document delivery. Faculty and students can use the listing feature to
create lists of important journal titles as well as search results and
the links to two Internet search engines found on each screen to search
for journal articles.

The new contract includes Ulrich's Serials Analysis System. Libraries choosing this product will be able to use its capabilities to evaluate their serials collections against the large Ulrich's database, to identify gaps in subject area coverage, to assist in collection development decisions and its reporting features to aid in budget justifications, grant applications, and accrediting studies.
