- The Steering Committee has approved the cost-sharing plan to license Blackwell Journals. Member institutions should fax their intent to participate to the VIVA central office, reconcile their list of 2006 print subscriptions with the Blackwell office, and contact their subscription agents if they intend to cancel print or continue print titles at a discount. We hope to provide participants with a final tally of costs in mid-November. (10/26/06)

(2/10/05) Ariel Global Upgrade Schedule - Infotrieve has announced that they willhave a single "hot cutover date in the summer. If we are unable to resolve the compatibility issue, we arecommitted to a July 14, 2005 hot cutover date for Ariel 4. This will eliminate a rolling upgrade plan based ongeography".(1/25/05) Ariel 4.0 software was mailed a few days ago. Please remember that theResource Sharing Committee recommends that VIVA members NOT install the software immediately. Please watch fornews on the ILL listserv. (12/13/04) The Steering Committee approved the RUC recommendation to acquire IOP Journals through a cost sharing arrangement with the current subscribers for 2005 and 2006. (6/7/04) The VIVA Organization Plan was revisedand approved by the LAC on 9/12/2003. (2/23/04) The 2002-03 annualized FTE numbersfor VIVA members are posted. (12/18/03) VIVAhas just added Mechanical and Transportation Engineering Abstracts (MTEA) to the group of databases available fromCambridge Scientific Abstracts. MTEA provides citations, abstracts, and indexing of the serialsliterature in mechanical and transportation engineering and their complementary fields, including forensic engineering,management and marketing of engineering services, engineering education, theoretical mechanics and dynamics, andmathematics and computation. This database provides in depth, comprehensive coverage of the international engineeringliterature with the monitoring of over 2,600 serial titles as well as numerous non-serial publications. Datesof coverage are 1966 to the present, with almost 500,000 records currently available. MTEA continues coverageformerly provided by Mechanical Engineering Abstracts, which ceased in 2002 but is still available through CSA. VIVA received the Governor's Technology Gold Award for Government Service in Higher Education at the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Symposium (COVITS) on September 22. Innominating VIVA, Dr. Carl Kelly, Chair of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia stated: "In ouropinion, VIVA represents the single most important technological development in Virginia higher education in thepast decade; moreover, we believe that VIVA is one of the most significant developments of any kind in Virginia government over this period. We are convinced that recognition of VIVA -- for its innovation, its results and itsefficiency -- is not only long overdue, but also very appropriate at this time, as it enters its tenth year ofexistence having recently surpassed $100M in cost avoidance for the Commonwealth." The private colleges and universities are able to subscribeon an elective basis to the Gloabal Books in Print with Reviews, the Books in Print with Reviews,or the Ulrich's Web and Serials Analysis System. We have completed the RFP process for the Modern Language Association(MLA) International Bibliography and we have awarded the contract to the Gale Group. The VIVA Virginia Heritage Project has been selected as the Solinet2003 Outstanding Library Programs Award in the area of Preservation and Electronic Information. Governor Gilmore's proposed budget cuts VIVA's annual budget by $426,270each year for the 2002-2004 biennium. This cut, along with the possibility of no additional funds for annual priceincreases (due to inflation or increased enrollments), will make severe cuts to VIVA's electronic resources inevitable.(1/3/2002)

The VIVA Resources for Users Committee will hold two refresher sessionsfor the Ulrich's Serials Analysis System, on March 10 at Blue Ridge Community College, and on March 11 at Randolph-MaconCollege in Ashland. Bob Gerace of Bowker (Bob.Gerace@Bowker.com) will conduct the training, which will featureenhancements to the system during the past year and using reports for individual libraries. Following the training,Paul Metz of Virginia Tech will present "VIVA's Findings Using Ulrich's Serials Analysis System for VirginiaLibraries." Registration and refreshments begin at 9:00; the session is from 9:30-12:30. The morning willconclude with lunch on your own. Registration is limited to 40 participants per session. Edward Summers (ODU) has written a PERL script that can convert theserecords for electronic texts into the MARC (MARC communication not flat ascii MARC) format. Preliminary testingindicates that it loaded into the Innovative INNOPAC with no problems.
We need other libraries on other OPAC systems to try it and share theircomments and suggestions with the VIVACAT-L group. For details, be sure you are subscribed to the VIVACAT-L listserv. These guidelines have been prepared to assist VIVA schools in cataloging their resources,if they choose to do so. The Steering Committee encourages providing intellectual access to our VIVA resources,as a way to encourage use and integration of the VIVA resources into the teaching and learning environment. Pleasenote that the Subcommittee recommends using one record for cataloging titles in print and electronic format.
